Don't Tell Ray: A PT2399-Based Oil Can-Style Delay

Hi all, this project was one that I wanted to do for a while. It's been pretty fun digging into how oil can delays work and sound. Don't Tell Ray has a front end that can get gritty and dirty, a sinusoidal LFO, modulation speeds that match the hardware, and a tone control that allows the delays to stay nice and clean or dark and mellow. Very nice! You should tell Kipper, he's on a Dub trip over on another thread, and that'd be perfect!

One comment - it sounds like there's scratching on the Grit pot in the video, and checking the schematic on your site, you've got the bottom end of the volume-levelling half connected to Ground, whereas the output from the op-amp will be at Vref. So it looks like there's DC across the pot, which would explain the scratching.

I’m did do something similar that I think I called pitch pirate or pitch bitch….. a long time ago here.
With the pitch shifting delay.
Turned out a treat as I remember.

Yes, the Grit pot B is scratchy because it's got DC across it. Needs R31 to go to VREF or have a cap inserted. On the other hand, you may want vintage crackles.

One thing in your description of the original, I'm pretty sure they use electrostatic recording hence the rubber heads and special oil to lube and insulate. But I'm going by hearsay so check before changing.

You may well be right about how it operates, I can't claim to understand them fully.

Thanks to you and Tom for pointing out the VREF thing, it makes sense and I'm surprised I didn't catch it. Oh well. I typically associate the grout with changing it and leaving it somewhere by and large.
