I want to build a distortion pedal with o lot of gain, and i want to know which one is the best for a big heavy sound ???

petemoore

Check out some of Ansil's brand new stuff. H'es put up three new schematics that look pretty kool.
I like Tonebenders alot, was getting great results testing it through my friend's Boogie Mark III. He agreed...great fun and sound.
They can be rather troublesome to get 'right'.
 Blackfire is Killer.
Boost the FF is one of my personal faves, 1 stompswitch...simply elegant.
I would start with the booster. Then I would build a couple Fuzzes.
The Blackfire is easier to wire than the parts count would let on because there are no crossing wires.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

although I haven't built it myself, everyone raves about the obsidian....

downweverything

i definately second the blackfire.  easy build too.

Peter Snowberg

Remember to check out Aron's circuits too... I've heard more than one person describe some of them as heavy.... really heavy. :D

I thought Aron's Shaka Express really rocked. Someday I'm going to build that one, I just keep forgetting about it.

The Obsidian Overdrive really rocks, too.

Ansil

for my money there is three diy builds that absolutely smoke..

insanity..   aron nelson
obsidian..  any version..   joe davisson
any of the 386 stuff that i have done, on my site.

the homie don't play that fuzz is one of my current favorites.

also check out some of the jfet stuff like the eggstacy also on my site

I still like Doug Hammonds Sweet 16 with Jfet's.  Big Smooth Heavy distortion with a notch filter.

do you have the schematic or pcb layout of this distortion ? Where i can find a sound sample :?:  :D

zener

I'll go for Aron's Insanity Box. Extreme distortion, gain and sustain  . All you're asking for. I bet, you'll like it. Schematic, layout and PCB are in the schematics page, the link is above. If you want to hear it, just search the archives "Insanity box". Aron posted there three different links (not here).
Oh yeah!

casey

dude, the smash drive is the way to go.
i built one...it's easy and it rocks......
tons of gain and a real mean sound.

the parts are easy to get a hold of too.

here is the schem.

Yeah, I second Casey, the Smash Drive is a bit easy, few components therefore smaller pcb, less cost.

I'll have it this way, if you're after value, circuit simplicity and heavy sound, I'll go for Smash Drive.

If you want some challenge in building one, go for the Insanity Box. The  extreme sound is exactly what the "Marketing Crap" says. It rocks.
Oh yeah!

Doug Hammonds site has the Sweet 16 and other cool stuff.  I agree the 386 project is simple.  The Black Fire is easier than the Obsidian, and Joe D. likes it bettter.  Sweet 16 has a fairly hi parts count.

Might check out the Supa Nova, someone around here has PCB's for sale for it.

I've made a PCB layout for Smash Drive and Boss DS-1 from which
one you can get heavy tones too...
if you want check it out
