sounds like a good idea, but i have no clue on how difficult it'd be, finding good transistors, would be hard...

I'm thinking because the gain is set by the resistors around the transistor, getting bias might be easier than on a FF for example.
 I would certainly trimpot or socket the collector resistors.
 I think I rememver hearing this has been done, but don't remember any details.
 The Big Muff was the obvious choice...I want to do a 'seriesed amp' [one gain stage into the next liek BM] as opposed to feedback amp like FF and TB...
 I thought about doing a coulpe boosters/couple buffers seriesed in some order, but the countless variables there would be better explored on a breadboard..
 I don't know enough about current amps driving voltage gain amps etc. to speculate about hybrid designs...the different actives [OA, bipolar, Fet, Cmos, Ge etc] all seem to work pretty well with eachother when I change effect order at the pedal board ... I'll have to earn some duckies and finally get myself a breadboard...
