I'm using 2 GE's in a Black Fire Stage right now, with the standard resistor values.  I'd recomment getting the highest hFe that Small Bear has for sale.

You can rebias a Vulcan or Blackfire stage to accomodate any transistor type. PNP Vulcans won't work right because of the diodes. (Untried: A PNP transistor configured as a diode may work in the Vulcan.) Hot humbucker users should alter the parallel resistor/cap values after the gain control, raising the resistance and lowering the capacitance proportionally.

I haven't tried opamps with diode-inputs, but will eventually. With these circuits, the tonal difference between BJT/JFET/MOSFET is not great, besides the amount of available gain.

To my knowledge, the amplifier stages (Vulcan, Blackfire 1/2) are "new". There is a circuit similar to the BF stage whose purpose is to raise frequency response, but that's the only one I'm aware of at this time.

Well thanx guys!. Thanks Joe for sharing and for amazing designs!. I've built a blackfire with bc109c, and doug's highway, using the blackfire stage, with bc549c, but still can hear a little hard edge of silicon in there, that's why i was asking that. I'll give this a try with some ac187, ac127, and 2sd352 i have lying around. Thanks again!!.
