i seem to be stuck in some sort of metaphorical rut, in which nothin i build or repair seems to work. has this happened to any of you, and what did you do?

Just calm down. Leave it alone, do something else for a week. If you go back then, you'll see the problem that's been staring you in the face so hard you didin't see it.

;) I think we've all had periods like these ;)

..ah..the "inverted King Midas touch" ...everything you touch turns to...wet toiletpaper...useless/worthless....usualy means you need to do something else for a couple of days...just play your guitar for a few days and dont think about it...all will be clear to you when you get back...

Oh yeah, it happens to us all. Regularly. This is just Mother Nature's way of saying "Go out and get a life." When a decent interval has passed, enough for you to have got a very small life and realized once again that most people are less interesting than the smoke patterns rising from your soldering iron tip, dear old Mother will let you off the hook until she is passing your way again in a few months' time.  :D

Other observers will tell you that occasional failure is good for the soul. Aahh, souls...

Don´t ask how many times...
If somebody did ask I sure could't tell how many times it's happened to me. I lost count a LONG time ago. I like to spend some time in nature, preferably sitting next to a waterfall and/or hiking up a tall mountain. I call it "mental recalibration". :D

Take a short break and you'll be inspired to come back to it when the time is right.

It seems to happen to me every 6 months or so...

The last time it happened, it lasted over a year.<<

The proof: Sunday, I took my ROSS Distortion clone with me when I went to my friend's house to practice for a Blues Jam. It wasn't working... The battery was dead  :(

It's a proof that it's been too long...  :?

One in every 2 attempts of mine has the midas touch and one in every two has the brown touch. So sometimes I have to give things a few goes and sometimes i just have to leave something and come back later or give up entirely.

Whenever I build a circuit I rely on it not working, and I'm mentally prepared for 3 days worth of debugging ;)

Makes it all the more fun when it fires right up!

almost all the problems i have had were totally stupid.  my most common are reversing the input to output, transistor pins, and connecting the power backwards, oh yeah and plugging two outputs into one input...i call it signal jousting!  the two outputs backfeed signal into each others output as well as the input... add lots of power and you get magenta smoke.  good times had by all.

rofl, that was a good laugh

yeah i think signal jousting would make an awesome sport.  your two competitors design their circuits, you then plug their outputs together and have at it.  first one to catch fire loses.  i can see it now.  battlebots is for amateurs.  ill shutup now.  ive said enough.

And here's my output stage :D

http://www.resonanceresearch.com/marx-impulse-lightning-generators-displays.htm

I suppose using real lightning would be cheating, but what about just a loop of wire? Not that it would make the other circuit blow, but hey, the best offense is a good defense... and barring that, half a million volts.

I think that if anyone writes up the Circuit Jousting specs, the possibility of anything so simple (as well as nonconductive materials) be taken out, because matches of completely passive elements, "wire vs wire" and "10KOhm resistor vs THE INDUCTOR" aren't so exciting. I suppose a wire wouldn't really classify as a circuit though, so the integrity of the game is still there. Sorry, it's been a long day :)

Anyway, I think we're in the wrong hobby after seeing that link. Sure, I obviously like my stompboxes as much as the next guy here, but just look what we could be doing:

Whoops..... I forgot you Stanford folks were in the competition.

I guess I need to up the output power to have a prayer of a chance. ;)
