quick summary!
started playing 18 months ago (34 late starter, u never know when its goin to grab yer) going well. got a bit of electronic background, grade 3!
gave it up for catering.

built my first stomp, the tweak`o`, like it!
aim is to build my own valve amp eg Ax84
but am still learning and refreshing.

what would be a good stomp box to go for next? real mctube or stay with semis for a while? i live in UK so alot of the stuff is slightly differnt, do u know of any good uk links for guitar gadgets and stuff wich would work on our voltages etc?

thx for ne help ;-)

Welcome! :D

The first thing to remember is that people look at you real wierd if you talk about 'tubes' in the UK. They prefer 'valves' for some reason. Being half-British I should agree with 'valves' but I can't see why - tubes look like... well tubes

Your next box, well it's all up to you I guess, you could use starved-plate tubes with 12v, or some of those mini tubes that were designed to run at 12v or so 8) It'ss all up to you really. You could also build a 230v pedal like the Shaka Tube 8)
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.

You can try one of the ROG amp simulations, or one of the cool Tim Escobedo's effects.

First question to ask yourself is:  Do I want to make something that I can learn from or something that achieves a specific outcome painlessly?

2nd question:  Do I want to copy someone or some sound, or do I want something to throw a curveball at my playing and make me rethink my style?

3rd question:  Do I want to stick to easily obtainable parts or do I have the luxury of using "whatever it takes"?

4th question:  What are the troubleshooting risks?  What is the likelihood I will get lost?

Answer those and that will point to a next project.

i have a zoom707II effects processor so i got aot from that but theres something soulfull bout using/making your own!

iam a big prince fan, have been for 20 years got into him round the controversy/ 1999 album years. i belive him to be a very much underrated player. would love to obtain some of his tones eg the morning papers and purple house.

i think the answer is maybe a couple more stompboxs for leaarnig then on to more complex stuff! ive got a old 1960 ish hacker valvue uh um "tube" amp :-) would like to put a preamp on it. i also got hold of 1960 fergusion radiogram that has a real old celstion speaker and tubes. plays ok thru it but it needs to be driven harder so a more powerfull pre amp would be good! ohhh theres so many choices! might take it to pieces and put it in a practice amp cab???

thx for all your replys already!

Welcome to the forum! :D

Since you say preamp in your last post, why not build a booster from the beginner project section? It's a good building block that should serve you well as a useful device.

If you want to go more complex, I second going with any of the http://www.runoffgroove.com amp sims! 8) there are so many good DIY designs. If you want heavy distortion check out Joe Davisson's and Aron's stuff. Also check out Doug Hammond's site. There's just no way to name all the good ones. :)

There have been (several?) discussions on Prince here. Check out the search feature at the top, but be warned it's kind of klunky. ;) If I recall, he uses mostly Boss pedals (see the schematic sections).

Best of luck on whatever you build!

Take care,
-Peter
