EH Small Stone Phase - problem.

hey guys,
a friend of mine has the EH Small Stone Phaser and he said he has a problem with it.  He says it does sound like a phaser and lo-fi sounding. Not sure if that helps to figure out the problem but thats what he told me.

Any idea what it could be?

Erm,

I'm definetly not a pro on the subject but I heard electrolytes are a common
thing that goes wrong in old EH products (or any old products for that
matter...).

If it's old the best bet would be replacing them with some new ones.

good thing: it sounds like a phaser...

what does he mean with: "lo-fi"?
does he run it in an fx-loop, thus possibly overriding it?
in that case, he should try it before the amp, instead.
