I should have built one of these ages ago, Joe Davissons circuit is simple and sound F***in GREAT !!
Highly recommended build, I used a larger cap on the output ( .22 uf ) and two 270k resistors as I had no 220k's.
Diodes were 1N4148's
I tried a few 5089 trannies, 'til I found one i liked more, seemed a smoother one, perhaps not as "high gain"
Overall a nice "Fat" overdrive with good response from the gain pot and the Gtr vol pot.
Click on the link and scroll through the pics of the enclosure and stripboard build.
Enjoy,
Marty.

Beautiful enclosure, very stylish!

Those vintage knobs match the box incredibly.

Does the 9V battery fit inside the box?

Joe Davisson

Looks cool! Socketing the transistor is a good idea on this one, too. Thanks!

Yeah, it was a christmas pressie ! a nice "smelly candle"
the PP3 fits in fine, its quite a deep and "sturdy" tin I found a few more
at the "Muji" shop, a Japanese outlet in the UK.
Might have to re-use the tin for a "Black Cat" overdrive  :D

Cheers,
Marty. 8)

Nice work. The Easy Drive is a very nice little circuit, huh?  8)

Hal

ah, drill to strip it looks nice.  I used a little file last time I used something like that... kinda messy

QuoteWhat are the red squares?

Looks like the socket for the transistor.

siaoguitar

the red squares i reckon is break point right Torchy?
we gotta burn off the copper track there rite?

Paul Marossy

Oh, those red squares?!
Never mind what I said earlier...

Hi all-
Just finished the Easy Drive myself, and wanted to thank Marty for starting this thread.
Also thanks to Joe Davisson for the design in the first place, it sounds awesome!
Here are some final pix.

Thats cool !
I'm enjoying those "tin box" builds, I've got a "Brian may treble boost" in a "Fishermans friend" hot sweets tin  :D
Not sure about a DPDT switch though, they would need some support under the lid for "gig" use !!

Cheers,
Marty.

Yes, that's why it's an "always on" effect for now. It would probably cave in if I put a stomp switch on the lid!
This was my first recyced tin effect. The only thing that was dificult was putting the 1/2" dia. holes in for the jacks. Thin sheetmetal is not drill friendly! I wound-up drilling the holes to 1/4", then using a Dremel with a rotary burr to enlarge the holes free-hand. Came out kind of acceptable I guess.

Nice job on the Easy Drive!

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone know of software that automatically designs a stripboard build off of a schematic?  Wouldn't it be nice to have a little shareware/freeware script for that purpose?

Or, alternatively, software that automatically designs a build off of any of the various padded board designs out there .....
