I like General Guitar Gadgets a lot, because it provides both a) Layout/Wiring Diagrams, which are a little easier to read than schematics, and b) the option of buying pre-made circuit boards, rather than building your own.  Are there any sites that offer similar services?

I know it's better that I simply learn to make my own boards and to read schematics, but I'd like to have a few (at least one) working pedals under my belt before I spend time learning any new skills, or buying more equipment.

goto TonePad.com  they have all three for ya.  You can purchase boards from FP or make your own.  FP is a super nice guy and will help you out in time of crisis.

you'll likely get good stuff from both of those guys...
I haven't seen JD's boards, but I've heard that they're great.. and FP makes a beautiful PCB.   Both are great guys and very helpful.

other good starter sites (other than this one) that I'd recommend are GEOFEX and AMZ (links above) for some great reading material.

I've always believed that beginners should learn how to read a schematic. The only reason being that long ago I used to put things together by "numbers" with the Paia stuff and other things.... but I could never debug them or figure out in any way how they worked.

OTOH, I am not blind to the fact that creating a working circuit is probably a lot easier on a PCB - although not necessarily time saving for small circuits.

The sites you mention are great and yes, our little DIY stompbox world is not that large.

try

They have simple circuits that you can do a lot of playing with.  Most of the projects have simple perf layouts also.
