Tube-like low power amp (MOSFET Ruby?)

Hi.
Would I be right in thinking that somebody familiar with mosfets could design a small (2 to 5W) amp with tube-like overload tone?  Maybe based on a 12V 1A wall-wart supply?

I suppose that the pre-amp could be as simple as a CD4049UBE.
It should be very economical compared with a real tube amp.

There's a couple of low-power FET amps on the web which might do the job.  From memory, they're based on IRF510s.  Any comments?

Anybody?

That's pretty cool, casey.  I'm looking at doing a similar thing with one of the amp emulation circuits as the preamp.

casey, on your schematic, are the resistors in k ohms (10k, 39k, 1k) in the power amp section?  There's no indication.
