yo guys! wats a crossover?

wats up guys... im just wondering,, watsa crossover? meaning as the crossover for a PA system/// ive seen some racks but i dont kno wat it does to a PA system... and something they relate crossovers to speakers and shit like that.... also my friend has a PA speaker that has a little ciruit on the back of the speaker and he said that he doesnt kno wat it does.. the speaker is a passive speaker so i thought maybe it just helps the sound or something like that cuz wat i see are some caps, resistors and little transformers... thanks guys!

A crossover is used to split up frequency ranges to different speakers.  Highs will get filtered and sent to the horns, mids to another speaker and lows to the subs.  This example is a 3-way crossover.  Some systems have 2-way crossovers, highs, mids & lows, or however it is set.
