In a clipping Circuit is there any advantage/disadvantage to using a small signal diode like a 1N4148 vs a rectifier diode like a 1N4001? Or is it all the same because they're both Si?

advantage/disadvantage no.

Difference, yes.

Main things springing to mind are switching speed, forward voltage characteristics, junction capacitance maybe.... they could have an effect on the sound.

Shrimp down the pants!!!

I usually use 1n4148 AND 1n4001 together, I can hear a subtle difference in the distorsion if my ears don't cheat me, maybe for the slight asymmetrical clip of the wave.
