Boss NS-2 Noise Gate Redux: if you can help interpret this data...

This pedal is an eBay sale returned.  I suspect someone plugged something wrong in.  I have spent so much more time staring at the innards of this thing that it's not about the money anymore.  It's freakin' personal.

If you could help interpret this data, I would appreciate it. 

I'm trying to debug a Boss NS-2 Noise Gate.  When the pedal is activated, there is a "blatty" tone.  The Geofex dubugging page says this generally means gating problems, or (if I remember correctly) improperly biased transistors.  Since it's a noise gate, though, perhaps the "gating problem" symptom is a decoy?  I thought maybe a nearby 100uf electro cap was wonky, and in an earlier post, R.G. told me about why not to measure components that are connected (thanks again!).  That one was fine, though.

Looking at the board, I noticed that D1 was literally blown apart, and so I replaced it with a 1N4004.  Other than de- and re-soldering some adjacent caps, I haven't made any other mods.  Since D1 was blown, I suspect, but I can't  1) read a schematic 2) know enough    to know what to look for next.

I've giving up on this--it's just out of my ken, but maybe I'll come back to it (and my CS-1) in a few years. 
However, I am inspired to take another look at my abandoned Funny Cat, which doesn't do much but sound like a guitar right now.  But, the exercise of testing transistor voltages might pay off for a circuit that is meant to amplify...if I can only understand the relationship between C B and E.
