I was wondering how do you add to the resistence (in series) and take away (in parallel) on pots? I have only a few pots to work with and was wondering how to do this just in case I need to up the value or decrease it. For parallel is it wiper to one of the outside lugs? I'm lost. Please help.

Google "bendy pots" or "the sectret life of potentiometers."  Both are good web sites explaning the techniques (and consequences) of changing pot values (and tapers) with series/parallel resistor combinations.

I recommend buying a couple of the common value pots for experiments.  You'll never be able to get totally satifactory results without using the part you are supposed to.
