Don't even consider coating yourself. The presensitized boards are about as cheap as the board plus gook to make your own.

self-coating (strange word... :icon_rolleyes:), is nice however for experiments with non-PCB materials/purposes, of non-flat shape... (chassis/boxes).

It is. I've used it to etch parts out of thin brass sheet. But it's not good for fine PCB work.
