Anyone experience high gain noise in the easydrive?

Hello- built and easydrive sounds great just was really noisy with  a 2n5088...so I switched out to a 2n4124(I think) had an hfe of around 240 the noise went away, anything above that and it's way too much noise.. All of the 5088 I had (5) were noisy had a mps a18 as well and was just as noisy.  I read that this circuit should be able to take high gain transistors, so I may have something wrong. ...or is this a common thing with the easydrive.?
