where to buy the supplies?
« on: June 08, 2006, 10:09:27 PM »
where can i order (or go buy in real life) all the capacitors/transistors/pots/etc that i'll need? would it be wise to buy in bulk so i won't need to buy them again for a while?

If you have a Radio Shack near you that would work, expensive but you dont have to wait for delivery.
If you are just starting out and you arent sure you will continue to do this then that is the way I would go
at first. If you are going to stick it out for a while I would suggest getting in bulk, its way cheaper and you
can get a pretty good stock of parts built up for the same that you just spent at RS. A few places you could check out are:

63/37 is probably what you are looking for.

the search function is your friend.  :icon_biggrin:  entering "kind of solder" finds a message mentioning 63/37 solder.  entering "solder 63 37" gives more threads than you will care to read.

Try "Electronics - Parts and Supplies" or something similar in the Yellow Pages.  Good luck.  I live in a mid-sized city and the stores around here stopped stocking the right boxes a few years ago.

Assuming you have a credit card and/or you're not trying to sneak this stuff into the house, mail order is pretty fast, ya know.   :icon_wink:

the smaller caps (1 and .1uF) don't need to be electrolytics:  http://www.smallbearelec.com/Categories.bok?category=Capacitors%2C+Low+Voltage+Poly+Film

Those are really common. They definitely have them all at Mouser or Jameco.
mF and uF are the same thing: microfarad.

Here's the electrolytics at Jameco: http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&categoryId=203060

In addition to what Korgull just said, check out this page.  It has lots of info with specific part numbers.  Do a search for ".1" and it will take you right to it.

yes, the "u" in uF is taking the place of the greek letter mu which looks like this: .  so sometimes you will also see F.

this comes up in measuring volts and amperes, too.  microvolts are V  (or mV) and microamps are A (or mA).

well ... the .1 mf choice is one of the ones you mentioned ... yes.  but be sure to click on the right value.  there's .056, .068, and .082 mf listed there also.

okay, i found some of the stuff at mouser, but i don't know how many mm's i want the pot to be, or the specs for anything else for that matter.

i'm a complete n00b here, but hey, i'm trying my hardest!

pot = potentiometer

at the smallbearelec.com site that you were just visiting there is a link on the left to Potentiometers and Trimpots.  if you follow it you will see an entry for Pot Alpha Single-Gang Linear Taper 16mm.  get those.  or get 16mm at mouser.  24mm tends to be a bit large.  smaller ones may not have a high enough rating for your circuit.

thanks! for some reason i didn't see the option of changing it.

so, instead of looking for uf, i look for mf? ie - 10mf, 22mf, and 27mf? does the manufacturer really make a difference?

Honestly, for your first time out, you should probably order from Steve (Smallbear).  It's real easy to order the wrong part from the Mouser or Digikey if you're not careful.  Steve caters to the guitar effect market, so his stock is a lot more goof-proof.  Also, if you tell him what you're building, I'm pretty sure he'll steer you in the right direction.

i think this is my last question, haha

for the capacitors, does it matter how many volts they are? the ones im looking at are 16v... is that what i want?

thanks a lot for all the help guys. i'll probably be bugging you for a while, and hopefully will be able to help some people out soon as well.
