Noob help, Concerning shopping for components
« on: September 24, 2006, 01:53:06 PM »
I'm gettgin ready to buy components for the TS808 project (bought the pcb from tonepad).

Right now i'm using 1watt 5% metal film resistors, except for a 1/4watt 2m2 resistor. Is this overkill?
Also, what sort of tolerances and power ratings should i be looking for in my 20k,100k, and 500k pots?
Can anyone recommend me one listed among the hudnreds and mouser? Do i want a panel mounted? trimpot? or precision? Am i right in assuming an audio pot ist he same as a log?

Also, when looking for transistors and IC chips like 2N3904 and  IC4558, there are dozens to choose from. How do i know which one i want?

Thanks.

Err i'm retarded, found the FAQ on buying components.

However i still have a few questions.
The schematic calls for NP and tant capacitors. I figure NP stadns for Non-polar, but what about tant?
What's a good NP 1uf capacitor form mouser?

Thanks.

tant stands for tantalum... I usually use whatever's on hand... but if you search for that material, you will find what you're looking for...

Good choice. Check out the TS article @ geofex.

1/4 watt resistors seems to be suffecient for most of the pedal projects. 1 watt resistors would be big.

I just used Alpha 24mm pots found here http://www.mouser.com/catalog/627/540.pdf (figure A. upper righthand corner). The tolerances are pretty high but it does not seem to matter since the pot is a variable resistance anyway.

The 2N3904 is a bipolar transistor, I think I settled with a Fairchild. But for my TS and NPN booster builds, I prefered the MPSA18, also by Fairchild. For the 4558, I prefered the Texas Instruments' RC4558P over NJR/JRC's NJM4558D (which is actually marked as JRC4558).
