Digital Snake

I know this is the wrong forum alltogether,
I wanted to know how difficult it would be to make a digital snake, I beleive you can make it from Dsp Chips and you convert the signal to digital then shift it up nice and high on the frequency band and then the oposite at the other end. In addition there would need to be some sort of switching device at the stage end to switch on 48v phantom and dB pads.
Has anyone tackled anyhting similar to this?
