Strange Stuff Happening on Breadboard

I breadboarder this and it works really nice as long as the vol on my guitar is maxed out.  If I back off the volume at all, it starts to interact with the gain pot and different combinations of setting on the 2 give me different flavors of a few things.

1) High pitched squealing oscillation that changes pitch when slightly twisting either knob
2) Slow popping oscillation that makes the signal sound like a tremolo
3) Really clear radio signals (gain changes stations)
4) Really fuzzy super overdriven big muff sound

All of this changes character slightly based on the guitar and amp (tried 2 of each).  The part I really don't get is why the guitar's volume affects it but everything goes clean when the volume is maxed.

The breadboard can do some weird things sometimes. Sometimes it's bad connections, leads suspended in the air, etc....
