DOD 440 Env. filter

Can this be made using photo cells and LED's for the vactrol?
 I have the Nurse [Quacky], and I love her...lol...how does this ckt compare...like differences/avantages wise?

I see now the post about vactrol/LED, LDR...[from a couple days ago]
 DOD ENV. Filter 440
 I looks like the vactrol section in the 'box' [on JD's schematic] is one LED and two PHoto cells?
  {one side of the LED goes to ground, the other to the 22k]
  [and two photocells are above the two paralleled 220k's ?] Is this correct?
 It looks like the bypasing is done with a 3pdt? could I just eliminate the 4k7 and the indicator LED and use a DPDT?
