I want to build, but I cant figure what LM386 is. What type of component is that? sorry for the noob question.

You need a glade plug-in, in on a footswitch.  Kick on the big muff, then hit the air freshener pedal.

Well, it's a good place to start...welcome to the forum!  We were all noobs once.

An LM386 is an integrated circuit chip that is built to be an audio amplifier.  It has several transistors, resistors, and capacitors inside it to do this function, so it's pretty easy to work with.  It's not microscopic (altho the transistors in it are) but is very small, and pushes into what's called a  8 pin DIP (dual inline package) socket on the board you'll be working on, so it's simple to connect.  Each pin has a separate function (input, power lines, output, setting gain...).

Try Googling these unknowns, lots of great info out there on IC's, transistors and the like.
Good luck with the headphone amp, let us know if you get stuck!

Okay thanks, I'm gonna finish the booster pedal before I take this time for financial ;) and time limits, Thanks again! :icon_mrgreen:

EDIT: You think I could build this circuit for under ten bucks? I'd use an Altoids case for enclosure and I already have a switch and the 9V clip and wire and perfboard, so sans those, under 10 bucks?

Thats the first amp I ever built and what got me started in effects building :icon_biggrin:
ALLDATASHEET.COM is my favorite source for finding data. http://www.alldatasheet.com/view.jsp?Searchword=LM386

Should be able to build the circuit for under 10 bucks, maybe a little more with the jacks.
If your in the states you might get lucky and find a RadioShack that still has parts in stock. All of those parts were stock items at RS.

how would I add a LED indicator for when it is running distortion? I mean where would it go exactly?

Thanks! I know the soldering sucks, but it's all good! Had to have my brother help me a little :D

For a beginner, the soldering isn't that bad. But it will be better with practice.

That looks awesome! I was a bit worried that you'd missed a few resistors, but I actually checked out the layout and saw that it wasn't a Ruby  ;)
I'm still attempting to get mine properly seated in the toaster, I really need a speaker grille of some sort to clean it up a bit.

Congratulations, nice build! Will post my own headphone amp soon  ;D

Thanks for the link to alldatasheet.com. I've bookmarked it.

That is great! I Think the Altoids tin should have a new name, how about the 1590-AT  :icon_lol:

One question for the more experienced - looking at the drawing posted initially (a link to GGG), I noticed that if the out jack doesn't have the RING wired to the sleeve, the output will be only 1 channel (not sure if it's left or right).  Am I correct?  As I haven't built this yet I say for sure.  I suppose the problem is mute if you used a Mono Jack for the output (as I typicall do) but if you followed the layout EXPLICITLY, you would end up with a single channel only - at least from what I can tell...I've not been at this hobby long so I could be wrong.

Again, I'm impressed and will have to build my own headphone amp in a Altoids tin, er, 1590-AT  :icon_wink:

It will go on the "to be built list" after the BSIAB2, Ruby, Orange Squeezer, LPB2, Dr Boogey......the list goes on...

Thanks!
Also, it does come out in one channel, through my left earphone.

You could use a stereo jack and hook the output/hot up to the ring and tip.

So if I solder the output wire to the other point on the stereo jack, I'd get sound through both earphones, correct? :icon_question:
