I have some other transistors, the ones for Gus' booster pedal. Could I use one of those instead of the NPN 2N3904? Would it make a huge difference in sound?

You need a glade plug-in, in on a footswitch.  Kick on the big muff, then hit the air freshener pedal.

perhaps, but i think it would be good to use hi-gain trannies for one-transistor distortion circuits...

if you have a 2N5088 or a BC549 try it in...
Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar.  If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.

that's not so different from your 2N3904

So it will most likely still provide a decent distortion?

The specs of the 2N3904 and 2N2222 are very similar so you can interchange them. Test it and let your ears be the judge.
