Common Issue
« on: August 05, 2007, 05:09:42 PM »
I have finally got around to finishing this pedal, and all the amplifiing works well. THe problem is, when the dial is not at full or nothing, it gives off a low level hum. I know this is a grounding issue. Also, when I hit the button, there is a pop. I know that is a grounding issue as well. My question is where are the places I need to ground from? I know there are no shorts.

You need a glade plug-in, in on a footswitch.  Kick on the big muff, then hit the air freshener pedal.

Measure your output (red probe) on output, black probe on ground and measure DC. I wonder if you have a leaky capacitor?

okay ill try that tomorrow in the morning, then ill update this

also, i hope youre referring to the capacitor attached to the pot... ::)
could heat damage cause that cap to preform like that?

Okay I did that, and I'm getting in the ranges or .4 to .75 DCV.

Are you measuring the junction of the 10uF output cap and the 100K resistor on the output? If so, yes, you shouldn't have that voltage there. I would suspect a defective capacitor or some other wiring problem.

Search for 'switch pop' in the forum, you'll find tons on this.  Basically, there is a potential difference between the thru signal and what's floating around at your input.  When you switch, the difference 'equalizes' itself, and manifests itself audibly as a "pop".  There are ways to minimize that.
Sometimes it also happens if there is an error in building the circuit (omitting the pulldown resistor, power where there shouldn't be, a missing ground connection, etc).
