Hi all:
I finished my third Dr Boogey, with some Mods in it, using Gaussmarkov´s Layout. I Added a double volume switch ..like a dual channel, but only changes the volume for solos or like a mute funcion if you set one at zero.

i had problems at first with not enough gain (weird on this killing machine) but with some tweaking and carefully chosen fets i turn out pretty amazing..

some clips (All maxxed gain):
mid scooped, high treble, low presence, full bass..let´s headbang!!!! note the palm mutings..nice!!

full bass, 50% mids, 60% treble, 60% presence, nice heavy twang....Neck PU (paf-pro)

Same as above, first bridge PU, then neck PU...

setup:
Guitar - Dual Rectal - 90´s peavey bandit 112 clean channel all eq´s at 0.

All was recorded miking the amp speaker with a cheapo mic goin to the PC. A touch of delay was added..just for the kicks...

so..
enjoy!!!

Sounds good

BTW, if there's a fx loop return on that amp like on my peavey Studio Pro 40 you can bypass the preamp altogether.  I think it is labeled "pwn amp in".

dschwartz

yes, it has a power amp in...i dont know why i didnt plugged it there..maybe lazyness, i didnt wanted to stand up and move the amp (its in the rear panel).. i was tired!!

Sounds very bright and piercing to me but maybe it's just the mic and amp tone controls.
I took a section of the first clip and equalized out some of the high end.
Is this closer to how it actually sounds?

dschwartz

yes!! that´s how it sounds!!!!!
... i think i mik´d too close to the center of the speaker...and my headphones at home are bass biased...
i didnt want to eq cause it feels like cheating....but it has a piercing high tone..

thanks!!!!!
your eq´s clips sounds awesome, just like at home....

it sounds really really good !!!
i wonder why mine doesn't sound like yours...My first try was with all J-201's but i couldn't set the trim pots to make it sounds right, way to much gain, sounded gated with palm muting or started self oscillating...I change Q1 and Q2 for 2N5457's and now it has less gain, more classic sounds...I'm planning to build another one to see if I can make it sounds as it should...
The second clip (hard blues)  is the the sound I'm looking for...
Again, your Dr sounds really good  :icon_wink:

dschwartz

yes pierre, the hard blues was the sound i always wanted in a pedal...high gain, but clear, compressed and harmonically rich..

To get this sound i did this:
- Use gaussmarkov´s layout and scaled down tonestack
- change the 680pf (ussually ceramic) for a 1nF poliprop...
- change the 1uF first gain stage bypass cap to 680nF (for less buzzy sound IMHO)
- make the presence cap bigger (a lot bigger) like 22nF or 47nF, the stock value dont make a noticeable effect (i tried values till i liked the range)
- In my case, i had troubles with lack of gain (believe it or not..it had a lot, but this thing is suppossed to be a gain monster) so i changed the first stage bypass resistor to 2.2K, and lowered some 470k resistors in some voltage dividers of the signal.
- test A LOT of j201 till you´re happy

be patient with trimpots, start from output to input getting the most hiss (yes, it has hiss and i use it like a "trimpot OK" meter) more hiss-->more gain.

using the older layout i use a mpf102 at the third stage, keeping tha gain up and the sqeal down..

and the most important:
- no milleniums, only 3pdt´s
- Clean wire work
- shielded cable for everything you can (in/out/gain/treble/presence , etc..)
- a good soliud metal box and..
- a nice regulated power source.

Pierre

thank you dschwartz !!...I'll make a new PCB and start all over again with your suggested changes  :icon_cool:

Auke Haarsma

sounds impressive!

Can you explain why not to use Millennium bypasses on this build?

dschwartz

Millenium bypass introduces more oscilations to the circuit.. why? i dont really know  :icon_rolleyes:

but i tried and got heavy oscilations, even in bypass mode the sqeal was perceptible,...just decided to use 3pdt´s for easier wiring and more stability.

maybe that CMOS millenium may work cause it grounds the output at bypass mode...

Auke Haarsma

thnx.

Interesting findings on the mil bypass. I'm about to use mil bypasses in my mfx project (like umh 15 bypasses in a row....) because I thought they were true bypasse and thus should not introduce any oscillication. It will be interesting to see what happens in my project ;) Glad you solved yours switching to 3pdt.

dschwartz

Well, actually IT IS true bypass...BUT, it shares the power supply with the ckt. so maybe that introduced some interference..

Ah ok, I'll be having seperate/filtered ps for the switches. So that shouldn't be a problem.

(sorry for hijacking your thread, back to the Dr Boogey!)
