First digital pedal.

I am a freshmen EE at georgia tech and in 2 semesters i have to take dsp so i thought i'd try some on my own. What is a good build that involves not only building but programing that will make my guitar sound "cool" or just something simple like a tremolo. Is there a single chip configuration that i can reprogram and get different sounds depending on the programing? I am open to suggestions.

sorry to hijack, but you take DSP as a sophomore?  I'm taking my final exam for DSP on tuesday, and I'm a senior EE.  Damn, shoulda went to Georgia Tech!
