OP Amp question

I want to build Aron's Smash Drive, and I was wondering if any different ICs could be used. Could I use any type of OP amp? Would it work?  ???

The LM386 isn't an op-amp, it's a low power audio amplifier in an IC. The key to the Smash Drive is the way that IC sounds when it's overdriven.
