What would you recommend? I'm looking for something that can get a little grit to it without having to boost it all that much. In terms of boost I guess you could say I want 40% clean, 60% dirty  ;D

Does the rangemaster absolutely need an original OC44/71 to sound good? Or can I get away with something cheaper and more available?

i have heard many ge trans sound really great in the RM circuit.

read RG Keen's article on biasing the RM, it helps make the RM sound great.

in my experience, high gain Ge  trans ( above 115 hfe w/ leakage under 300 ) sound really 'juicy' in the RM.

+1 on the mini booster.  I think it sounds more like an od, personally.  Sparkle boost can also get dirty too.  Also try a sho with a master volume.

This makes me immediately think of Japanese 2SB devices (common in transistors 1970s radios).  Nice high gain and very low leakage (often only 10 or 20 uA)

Bluesbreaker clone (mine's a GGG build). I love it.

miniboost is great ... I used one for this for a few years ...

I've been using my own lately call the "Ego Boost" though.

I don't think anyone here has built it ... Has variable low end and gain ...

it's here:

layout and schematic, if you're curious.
