Is that basically amplitude modulation? Sounds more or less like a ring modulator, but with more of the original signal and carrier getting through.

wouldn't amplitude modulation be a tremolo? no, it's a sample and hold. there are two buffers with a fet switched by a really fast clock in the middle. when it's switched off a small capacitor holds the signal where it was which is held by the buffer. this in effect makes the wave have a ladder and sound like a low bitrate digital signal (atari)

Ok I'm familiar with S/H circuits from synths.  So then the more frequently the sample and hold samples, the greater the number of amplitude levels it is representing, similar to the number of amplitude levels represented by different bit resolutions in digital audio... just that in this case, they are probably not fixed to exact corresponding fixed amplitude depths/voltages, like they would be in digital.

I can see how that would work.

that's right. in fact it seems whenever the circuit is mentioned people jump in to remind that it is not true bit crushing, as you pointed out there's infinite number of amplitude depths and the levels are not fixed. the sound is still right. it's simple and fun but not sure how practical this would be for use without further development removing the noise.

the schematic is here but i had to modify the values to get it working: http://experimentalistsanonymous.com/diy/index.php?dir=Schematics/Fuzz%20and%20Fuzzy%20Noisemakers

Here is another video of Frequency Central's great Little Angel. We made this soundclip into the Boss mobile studio to try to capture the sound better than thru the shitty camera mic.

Here's a couple of the SHO clone I did.  The first video is a lead sound with the SHO going into a modified TS9 into a Boss DD-3.

This one is just a straight comparison of the pedal off then on.  The video doesn't do it justice.  It gets A LOT of boost even on the lowest
setting.

Thanks. I'm going to try to lower the voltage on the collector of Q2 sometime. I remember running it a little hotter than usual when I built it, it sounded nice on a quiet amp but the louder I play the looser it gets.
