hi guys another 555 timer....oh no!!!!!!!..... :icon_rolleyes:

introducing the 'tiny stereo panner'

here it is.....

tip: match the tolerance of the 470r's to get equal timing on the leds...

am working on the depth control...any ideas?

heres the schemo..for all you schematic fanatics....

right led corrected ok...

The right-side LED in the schematic is backwards.

so it is..... :icon_rolleyes:

now corrected ok.

Great!
Could you explain the circuit?

ok...i'll try. the 555 puts out a timer which can be sped up..or slowed......this is converted to light(leds)...
the light shines into the ldr's one on one off...alternating...this is then taken to the alternating output...left and right out!..

the input is fed into both ldrs (resistors).which are being activated by the leds..

thats it!.

And basically performing an on/off for each side of the output signal.
A dual tremolo basically. Two outputs so one is "off" while the other is "on".
Cool!

That was a great idea!!
Congrats

Bloody brilliant !!
How about a soundclip ?
I am interested in how slow it will pan.
And hooking up the speed control to a foot treadle.
This would be perfect for the theremin/interlude in "Whole Lotta Love"
I'm no EE or even a tech, just a monkey with a soldering iron that can read, and follow instructions. ;D

If speaking about Deadastonaut's work, you could always say, "That's out of this world!"

I wish I'd known how much simpler a 555 based LFO could be. I didn't really know much about the chip until recently.

Several months ago I built a Splitter-Blend and stuck a Tremulous-Lune LFO with alternating LED's in it to drive the "blend" potentiometer. The pedal is switchable between the standard pot-blend and the LFO blend.

I don't really use it much, but it's cool to hear a phaser warble between a flanger, distortion oscillate with clean, etc.

cheers guys...hope you all try it ..!!!!!

havent rigged up the ldr's yet..because i have to get them tomorrow!!!.i used mine up!. :icon_rolleyes:
but in theory it should be ok...i think as long as the flipping from one to the other is the same timing
it should work out fine....might need a bit of tweaking though!...but the lights look good so far
and theres always the bonus of the rate leds on the box too...i love an led!!!!or two!!!.... :icon_eek:

@bryan. it will go really really slow depending on the size of the cap...i think it will go up to 10 - 15 minutes if thats long enough :icon_mrgreen:
i tried it with a 100uf cap and it took ages to flip..

@derringer...yeah ive just got into messing with the 555....its a great little ic...theres a 556 dual one i might get...hmmm...

cant wait to try it with different effects...delay on left..phase/chorus on right etc...should be cool!.. :icon_cool:

just thinking aloud again!..but it would be great to have something like the colorsound inductorless
wah in it somehow!.reacting to the leds/ldr's too...hmmmmm....just a thought..
i built one ages ago and swapped the wah pot for an ldr...it was great!!! like the morleys..
or if anyone has a simple filter idea to mess with..that'd be interesting....

nice project! kudos man!

2 questions though:

1) how about adding a 1K BLEND POT instead of the 2 470-ohm resistors? how much effect do you think would it make?

2) how do you implement the bypass on this thing   :icon_redface: do you short the LDRs altogether when using stomp switches? (since there are only 3 poles in a 3PDT)/ or do the leds remain on all the time allowing it to make a very low LDR resistance (say 5K) and basically just splits the signal?

3) in connection to number 2, how about a buffer?

ooops, that made it 3  ;D sorry for the noobish questions.
i am what i am, so are you.

hi mugshot:i tried the 1k pot without the 470's..it made the leds brighter, but stoppped the flashing at full turn..
i just tried the 1k from pin 3 with the 470's and it dimmed them both nicely..but not really bright overall!..
might try some lower resistors 220r maybe...

as for switching havent thought about that yet!..inevitable mods to come i'm sure!.
and a buffer..yeah it could be done!.
all ideas welcome as usual ..as for being a noob so am i....i just experiment with stuff.... :icon_mrgreen:

your project kept me thinking, "hmm, how about i control the intensity of the panned signals?"  :-D

nice i've got serious itch to buy some overpriced 555s from the electrnoics store near us :-D
i am what i am, so are you.

Slade

Stereo pot or two pots in parallel with LDRs to control Depth?

mikemaddux

tried something similar with one side and a blinking LED before.......

awesome idea with the 555 timer! gonna have to try this one!

@mugshot. by dimming them you mean?. ???

@fernado. hmmm. a dual pot between  the ldrs to ground?..is that what you mean?
could control the intensity/brightness  of each left n right.....ahh i have a couple of dual pots... ;)

@mike. that looked like a cool little project !.. im a sucker for an led!!!... :icon_mrgreen:

am going to the stupidly overpriced 'maplins store today to get some ldr's..

just to let you all know...the leds were flashing with a kind of slight triplet timing,(one led was slightly on longer than the other)..
so i used 220r on one led, and a 1k trim pot on the other, to get optimum brightness too.....sorted. yay!!!!...
and now its proper 4/4 timing....i'll measure the trim later ok...

A 1M or 2M Dual Gang Pot would control the value of dark resistance of the LDRs. With the pot at maximum you'd have maximum resistance for the LDRs, and at minimum you'd put minimum resistance in parallel with the resistors so the signal would pass directly to both outs. I'd use a buffer at the input.
Maybe another way would be to put both LDRs from outputs to ground. You should put a buffer at the input and take outputs from there. I think that way you won't be loosing highs as the resistances go higher, and the 2M pot would work fine.

BTW, great idea! Congrats ;D

That would be good to get irregular LFOs with LDRs.
