In the Sept/Oct issue of TapeOp magazine there is a very interesting d-i-y article on a jfet gain stage used as a building block.  It is promoted as a "solid state tube"  and the text says the following:

"When listening to the Jfet circuit side by side the equivalent triode circuit, it's surprising how similar they sound." - pg. 28 Issue 37

This gain stage could be an excellent building block for effects use as well as audio recording.

Sadly, NOT free to us this side of the pond - far from it...

Thanks, Jack.  There are some neat bonus articles, too, including mads to the Paia Tube Mic Preamp that look interesting.

I just recieved it today in the mail and it looks like a great project.  They also have on their website some mods for the PAIA tube mic preamp.

I really like the *geiger counter* enclosure pictured in the article too! Unfortunately the author's site has been down since the article ran. Must be getting a big response?
