I have had almost no experience with filters, other than trying a few autowahs at the Guitar Center years ago.

I'm thinking of building one, and had my eye on the Neutron on generalguitargadgets.com.

Any others to think of?  Which would be a good introduction into the world of filters, and easily made with readily available parts?  the only thing on the Neutron was the 150K log pot and 1 M reverse log pot being a bit harder to find.

Thanks :)

I'd throw the Maestro FSH-1A Filter/Sample & Hold into the same category (for complexity, not necessarily sound). Both the Maestro and the Neutron can be powered (bipolar +/-9V) with the MAX1044, too.

Then there's the MXR, at Tonepad, which I haven't built myself, but have read good things about it. Might be a tad simpler build then the other two.

Or, if you want something more quirky/weird, there's the AG5 Funny Cat. I've got some audio clips on my web site.

thanks Charlie... hmmm choices!  i'm kinda leaning towards the Neutron right now, since generalguitargadgets has a great document on it :)

hey i forgot to email you about it, but I made a soundclip of your Dirty Bird going into a Big Muff going into the tap tempo/sequenced tremelo i'm making.

here's the clip

that Dirty Bird has been getting a lot of use! :)

Yudy - That sounds great! So, when can I get my hands on a TTTrem? Or, roll my own?

Goes without saying, the tap-tempo feature is quite cool. Have you also explored adding a sync (to external clock) input, so you could sync the tempo with, just for example, a drum machine or sequencer? 8)

I don't think you'll regret building a Neutron. But, fyi...

General Guitar Gadgets has pretty good documentation on the FSH-1A, too. And, there is another very nice looking layout here:

(not that I'm trying to talk you into changing your mind, or anything)

R.G.'s documentation for the Funny Cat, at GEO, is damn skippy, too!

hi Charlie,

thanks again for the info.. hmm, i'll have to look into those schematics more before i choose which filter i go with!  but yea, the tap tempo/sequenced trem is a priority.. we gotta get a few of those protos boxed up.  we're hoping to have at least a couple protos done in a month or so, so i'll let you know... we'd still love you to have a test run at it!

thanks!

build every damn filter you see!!!! :D  :x  :P
  IMO,
the modded mxr is subtle, nice att range
the nurse quacky/micro V are quick and no frills
never built the neutron
the modded fsh is kick ass,can get staccatto funk to long boooooowww drones
...
nearly finished the meatball moosapotamus did the schem for (i know i said this would be finished soon a bit back....needs the range switch and on/off putting on.but i've been sidetracked by a fine laydee!!!!!)
basically, all filter is good filter imho....
also,....if anyone has a schem for an ibanez af9/201......wink ....wink   :D

cheers
sam

Hank, could I get the meatball schematic from you?  Is there a site with info posted?

Thanks,
Alex

rocket

the ibanez AFL is the L series Auto filter and I think it's very much the same as the AF9 /201 - it's lacking the HP filter setting  though.

hi Charlie,

have you personally built that Meatball?  i think i'd like to try doing that as my first filter!

do you plan on getting pro PCB"s from expressPCB?  if so, i wouldn't mind going in on an order :)

Thanks!
