Hi evryone! I am just about to build my first amp. Its gonna be solid state because tubes are not cheap -no tube tone preachers, please-. I downloaded lots of power amp schems but they all seem to be for audio uses. The question is, can you use the same pwr amp with a different preamp more suited for guitar ? Im using 2n3055 , Mj2955 for the output pair. Power will be 40-60w. I also have some Ge pwr transistors, are these obsolete or can I build a practice amp using them? Numbers are 2sc481 pnp, ad161 and ad162 which are a complementary pair. Thanx, suggestions are welcome too, seems that nobody dares to cross the line that divides fx building from amp building( what you think?) :)

Hello Lobsang,

I have a little amp here that I think came from an old film projector which uses an AD161 / AD162 pair for output. The board says "5 watt type" on it. It also uses an AD162 for a regulator pass transistor. The driver is an AC128 and the preamp is three stages of BC109C. I've never powered it up since the AC128 was stolen for a fuzz face.

If you are looking for info on using AD161/AD162, I could draw up the scematic for the output stage.

You can use any preamp you like. The big difference will be how the lows are rolled off. By playing with that response, you can get American or British voicings fairly easily.

For a circuit that cross that effect/amp line, check out Doug Hammond's Meteor.

Good luck with your amp! :D

Hi Lobsang.
I built the preampsection from http://sound.westhost.com/project27.htm
It has a nice and simple design. I drive it into an old STK amplifier.
I'm pleased with it.
Good luck to you.
