Fuzz Factory question

I'm curious about the 220K to ground on the output of the Fuzz Factory. Is this necessary for the sound? Seems like it's just a voltage divider and can be omitted. Also seems like you could just use 100K pot on the output?

I'm assuming that it's OK to ask questions about Fuzz Factory these days. Let me know if this is not the case, it hasn't been in the past.
