How big of a difference would med. gain transistors make in a Scrambler circuit instead of the hi-gain darlington trans.? Would the gain, tone etc. sound much different?

It seems like it would make a large difference since the darlingtons have a LOT of gain...10,000+, while the normal high-gain BJT transistors are from 450-800, a pretty big difference.

I would definitely use the darlingtons in Q1, Q3, & Q4 like the 2N5306 (original) or the MPSA14.  The 2N5306 has a different pinout, B-C-E, while the MPSA14 has the standard C-B-E.  Q2 in the Scrambler is a regular BJT...I use the 2N5089.
