right i'm back on it, ive tried loads of tone controls now... ::)...

heres the 'chaos tone control on it...it starts at 12...then goes through the whole control, then back to 12 again...

:P

its ok but has lost that thrash in your face type feel as you play..... :icon_twisted:

Nice tone!!! Sound like The Pride Album of White Lion!! :D i like it :D

i added an extra cap to ground to it and will probably make it switchable, it just gives that tighter /more pantera/def tone riffin chug back....

so its normal/modern...bit of a volume jump, but i'll stick a resistor in there to match it if i can... :icon_twisted:

i'll sort it today hopefully...... :icon_rolleyes:

heres a bastardized version of the 'chaos' tone...it probably goes against all rules of electronics, :icon_redface: but it kicks ass in a detuned thrashy kind of way..

any suggestions/ improvements are welcome..its still a bit gritty i suspect the 470pf needs adjusting...but the gain is on full whack... :icon_twisted: ;)

heres the sound of it.. btw the pot is a 47k lin...not 100k. ::)

Wow that was freaking heaaaaaaaavvvvvvvy :D i like it :D but theres something missing on the heaviness  mmmhhh sounded harsh to me  ..  :icon_question: LPF might help :icon_question:

cheers guys, yeah its ok, i like that it doesn't get massively louder at either end like most tone controls do, , but it has taken the overall level down.....hmmmm...

more tinkering.... ::)

i took thwe 470pf down to 220p-330p, much less harsh....could be toggled....bla blah blah....we'll get there i'm sure!... :icon_twisted:

i have no 1000nf's to get deeper bass.....so i tried 2 parallel 470nf's but the theory of doubling the value didn't seem to have any effect...hnmmm....

i'm trying to get a good balance for standard tuning and drop c# too...a good all rounder if you like...   8)

To roll off some highs and reduce the harshness, try a cap to ground at the beginning of the tone control.  Start small and increase until you can hear it.  May reduce the oscillation as well.  You could also try one between the Mu-amps.  ;)

ok i'm back on it :)... i'll try those suggestions...cheers.

question:  this ts ^  cuts the volume below unity, but i like the fact that it doesn't get louder at each end of travel like others tend to,.... if i halve all the values will that bring the volume back up?....seems logical... ???

note:  ive been thinking of having 2 switchable tone controls for this...ive been getting a nice metal/blues feel on one tone...an a good chunk /crunch with the other^ ...just thinking aloud.. :icon_idea:

it would be nice to have a good all rounder, but i doubt its possible going by my experiments... :-\

EDIT:

i'll try halving values today see how it goes... :)

hmmmm...i'm still here ::).. tried the baxandall again, with varying values, but the sum of what i liked was very similar to a one knob version i did..

so i'm going back to that, with different values..

as you can hear on the clip (c#) there was no oscillation either..but under unity....its just trying to find that magic config of values etc....

or even whacking a buffer after the tone to bring it back up....hmmmmmmm.....

my cat is getting very pissed off with my thrashy antics.. :icon_twisted:...

oh i solved my oscillation problem by having one leg of a 4.7pf  in the ground on bread and the other in the air...much better..weird..but it worked..and doesn't affect the sound.

edit: its quite lonely on this forum trying out thrash/metal head stuff  :icon_evil:...i guess if i were building yet another fuzzy musey muffy it would be full of ideas!..but hey, thats demographics and taste for ya! ;)

Tone controls is/are an area that is not widely understood.  It is very important to the overall "character" of the device.  Since Metal/Thrash require a notch in the response, I like the Bridged-T with 50k trim pots for the resistors.  My Epiphone Valve Jr. doesn't have tone controls and is fairly midey with the 12" speaker I use.  I can't hear the highs very well, so I don't roll them off.

Have you seen the Vox tone control on the Duncan Tone Stack Simulator?  Some like it for the deep notch that it can provide.  Also, the original BSIAB has a different tone stack than your using.  :)

Lol. Sorry dude. The support is there but I don't know how to help you. I'm just not good at building circuts. So far, it sound killer! :icon_twisted:

@ paully , no worries man...i was just having a moaning moment... :icon_mrgreen:;)

@wgtp: yep, eq is everything especially when it comes to thrashy /metaly stuff, and your right, i should have tried the bsiab tone (variations) first off..

i'm a dumbass... :-[

i have the tsc, i was messing with it last night, trying different values on screen and on breadboard to actually see/hear the effect of component changes....

its a pretty cool tool...ideally i want a one knob tone, but if it has to be 2 so be it...i'l take a go at the vox 1 too...cheers man, i appreciate the ideas.. ;)

btw whats the 'bridged 't' one?.. edit: i'm reading this...

Check out the Geofex article sited above for Bridged T etc.

I had forgotten about STM's circuit.  He has done some nice work.  Check out his stuff here.  Nice simple midrange control.  ;)

I have to say I am much more of a distortion man than fuzz.   :icon_twisted:

ok , i'm back with avengance...thanks to walt for sending me some 1uf's.(non polar)..cheers man your a star!.. :-*

i went back to basics with the original tone and tweaked some values...it has a nice blues to old school metal to hard rock feel now and cleans up nicely...

the clip starts with drive at 9,12,3,and full gain oclock...i really like the bluesy setting and the metal..its really getting there now...just need to tame the highest treble setting, but that shouldn't be a problem...

and a little more tweaking to get that full on thrash back, without losing the bluesy cleaned upness... ;)....arghhh can't wait to get the pcb done and boxed up..so i don't have to battle against oscillation...
my cat is sick of squeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllll.... :icon_mrgreen:

remember this is without an amp...just into desk/hi fi... :)

opinions?..

edit:

this schemo  is after i did the clip the 470p tames the highs (and oscillation 8)) when the treble is full...
the tone is nice now at the 12 position...

i must stop talking to myself... ;) :icon_mrgreen:

I'm liking the sounds Rob, thanks for sharing this, It might be worth putting a low pass filter after the tone stack if you want to lose that very high top end you mention.
