SHARC assembler alternatives?

Disclaimers:  I'm Brian from Subdecay (evil for profit entity) so I'm not exactly a DIYer.  Also I know very little about programming beyond BASIC but have an employee who does that for us.

We've been using the FV1 for a few projects, but we are constantly working around the hardware limitations.  Tom, our programmer concluded that our best option for the future is to go with SHARC hardware for some more complicated projects.

Development boards seem reasonable, but VisualDSP at $4000.  That's something we might be able to afford, but I've heard rumors that there are other options for programming SHARC processors, but all i can find is broken links.

I'm guessing the answer is NO, or at least that alternatives are more of a pain to use than they are worth, but I'd feel silly spending $4000 only to find out there's something much more reasonable later.

I don't know how much power you need (maybe a lot if you're looking at Sharc) but the Freescale Symphony Soundbite might be worth a look too:

24-bit fixed point DSP, very cheap dev kits ($100 ish) and free development environment.
