Uglyface with LFO --new vero-- (unverified)

i just made a vero layout of the Uglyface with LFO (standard UF can be made by removing the 8 last strips), it's quite compact (although i'm sure someone can make it more compact!  :o ) technically it can fit in a small Hammond box but there's 2 footswitches, 5 knobs, 1 mini-switch so i guess the small Hammond is out of the question...lol

it's based on the perfboard by Andrew K.

i did it in one shot so there might be errors but i checked it twice, can someone verify it? (it's the most elaborate layout i ever did (my 2 first veros where a JEN Wah and a SHO  :icon_confused: )

thanks!

(can you confirm me that R11 is 100 ohms? i think i saw this somewhere on the standalone LFO schem)

Confirmed. I didn't realize I'd left that out on the parts table for my perf layout. Thanks for pointing that out :)

Nicw work! Do you have a schematic? It's not obvious where the LFO comes from.

thx, i took Andrew K's perf layout as a schem, the only "real" schem i have of this effect is the Tim Escobedo and it's a simpler design, my vero has all the mods done by Mick Bailey, i think i'll write notes with the vero schem detailing all the mods and what part change did what on the sound, plus original values so people will know where to start with when modding this circuit.

I was about to build the Uglyface, you see, and now I'm thinking I'll use this layout, since it has the LFO. It's just that it's really hard to spot mistakes in the layout and debug anything without the schematic as a reference, at least for me.

Mick Bailey

See my post on the LFO schematic at http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?PHPSESSID=f043ba193ba7aa7b4ea6fb16619e09c4&topic=66861.msg533226#msg533226

Also, in my experience the basic LM386 is better than the JRC version in this circuit and gives a far better frequency sweep. I've tried both back-to-back and it's chalk and cheese.

Hey, I've been watching this thread, and my curiosity has finally gotten the better of me...and a quick search did little to help...

What is the benefit/effect of adding an LFO to a fuzz? Does anyone have a link or two to some sound clips of this in action?

...or some better search terms for me to try :)

Thanks.

Hi! A fuzz with an enveloppe and a lfo...i think!

Maybe you can reach that kind of effects...

I know, but the pedal i built does not boost...it just increases volume!

a fuzz? i thought that the UglyFace was a poor man's EHX Micro-Synthetiser!   :icon_wink:

heh...the fact that I'm not sure if that's a joke or not is testament to my slackoffitude.

I'm so used to anything ending in 'face' being a fuzz...I blame everyone.

lol...so...now this sounds like a much more interesting (and usable) project...

...Carry on then...nothing to see here...

lol, don't worry, i also thought it was a fuzz for a while until i heard the samples... haven't heard one yet that i didn't like!  it reminds me a lot of my Electro Harmonix Micro-Synteseizer (i use the square wave slider maxed so the UF sounds a lot like it)

A few years ago I added a Luna Tremulus to a Crash Sync frequency control. I liked a lot the results.

If anybody is interested, it may be heard in mp3 in my Virtual Disc:

http://discovirtual.uol.com.br/disco_virtual/alexfrias/demo_pedais

the password ("senha" in portuguese) is alexfrias and the file is funk2.mp3

The Luna/Crash sound appears as a response to the main solo, it sounds like a sicky and synthy sax with lots of modulation at the end of each phrase. I've used a expression pedal to control the modulation depth.

Pagan and happy!

Hi! Is this layout verified and working? Nice work BTW!

hi all, i've now updated the vero layout, it's now VERIFIED ...  :)

i spent last night debugging my UF, reading every article ever written to know why no guitar sound was coming out, just the oscillation... to realize this morning that i forgot to put the 2,2uF between IC2 and IC3  :icon_eek:

works perfectly now, i can nail all the sounds i've heard in clips  ;D

one mod i strongly recommend is the use a reverse log pot for the LFO rate, a linear one will have a big portion of the pot LFOing very slowly and most of the "usable" range will be in the last 10% of the rotation...

Do you have a PCB for this, I'd really like to make this pedal,

I don't know how to perf board a circuit, I build mine from etching pcbs.

I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ronnie.

sorry, i don't have a PCB for it, it would be easy to do for anyone with DIY Layout Creator though
