I guess EVH never heard of microtones.

What would happen if you combined EVH with Ravi Shankar?

WGTP

I knew about the Blue Magic and didn't/don't see a problem with the 2.  I think it is a good study in how different design goals can lead to similiar, but not the same results.  Should we not have Gibsons and Fenders?  \

Gary and Brian emphasize low parts count and from looking at Jake's stuff, he tweaks until he likes it, regardless of parts count.  I think they should be posted together as a study in contrast.  Also hybrids and combos would be easy to figure out for those of us still learning.  Yo Gary, how about a feedback loop in there (positive and negative).  Put it back up and add a link to the Blue Magic.

Interesting idea, WGTP.  There's not much gain in the circuit, I'm not sure what effect the feedback would have.  The negative should lower the gain, but it's worth tinkering with.  How's the opamp madness going?

About the EVH microtones thing; check out his older whammy bar scooping thing.  He hits some notes that sound like Shankar plugged into a Marshall!  I miss the old Ed...

This resembles the sticky about credit. Why don't you guys put the article up there with a message "this looks like the blue magic by Jake Nagy, but it's not" ;)
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.

Someone around here ran a Mosfet Boost into a MuAmp.  Guess the 2nd stage could be that, or the Jfet boostrap circuit, for more gain.

I got the flu so the op amp thing came to a halt, but I think I have my methodology figured out now and it's not so overwhelming.

I put a 4.7uF from the source of Q1 to ground, the thing's got some grind(& hiss) now, gonna use it on New Years.

I'm happy to say that I found a printed copy of the Peppermill  :)

I didn't remember I had time to print it. So when I find time to build the Hiway89, I build it.

Anyway, what I really wanted to add is that I also once came up with a circuit similar to a published one. It looked like a modified copy of it.  And maybe that how it started in my head, I don't know.

But when I decided to make it more personal, it never sounded as good, and  finally gave-up. I never made it public for these reasons.

So I would say, don't try to change the set-up to come-up with a different circuit to get the same sound. It probably wouldn't work. I mean, it could sound good, but not exactly the same.

You would have to call it Pepermill 2    (You can do it anyway...)

But maybe you could first ask Jake if he would mind seing on Runoffgroove a design (almost) similar to his Black Magic.  Then you could act accordingly.

Just my 2 cents btw.

Um, has anyone contacted Jake (Nagy) and asked him what he thought?  Jake has a thriving practice now from what I understand (he's a clinical psychologist), and recently married, so I imagine he doesn't cling all that tenaciously to his "intellectual property" as either his future source of income or as a sign of his worth as a human being.  Still, he should speak for himself, rather than I or anyone else speaking for him.  If the removal was at his request that's one thing.  If it was simply Gary and Ben going the extra mile out of professional courtesy, well it speaks volumes for them as gentlemen but may still not have been necessary.

AHHHHH there is no emoticon to show my insanity.  Could somebody slip me a copy of the peppermill schematic and setup notes before it drops off the face of the earth.  I fear missing a masterpiece.  I was really impressed by it when i breadboarded it, but I did it purely off my computer monitor.  I dont find overdrives i like too often. nconrad@niu.edu

Same toughts exactly...

PLZ PLZ PLZ send me what you can about it...anyone?!
