I have a ton of metallised polyester film caps which have k after the numerical value.  With these 68k would be 68n, but whether this is standard I couldn't say...

Back in the heyday of electronics, the capacitors were mostly made of rolled paper as dielectric material. 1 cm (centimeter) of that paper equalled 1pF.

It seems that it was common to name the capacity in "centimeters" so one "k" was used as 1000cm (kilocm) of paper or one "kilopicofarad", that is, a nanofarad.

1K = 1nF

My father in law, in fact a very talented electronics expert and well above the age of 70, still uses that naming. He usually says "47000 centimeters capacitor" instead of 47nanofarads,  etc.

He told me all this. I never use this naming convention but it seems that Miguel Badia, the author of this article, in fact does use it.
