Scott:

The PT-80 is on my build list... somewhere.
In its "analog delay" capabilities, can it do flanging / chorusing / doubling, or is it restricted to reverb/echo - type stuff?  I never had an analog delay back in the day because I was too poor.  My digital delay is much too limited.  I'm wondering if it can do the "Time After Time" thing.

Mark Hammer

The PT-80 is intended to mimic a standard all-analog MN3005 (or SAD4096) based analog delay line.  These produce discrete echoes at a fixed delay which can range from very short (slapback/bathroom echo) to moderately long (a couple of notes).

The other function you list require such a delay to vary the amount of delay time continuously and require additional circuitry.  Some folks here have modified a PT-80 to accomplish some of these tasks by paralleling a photocell with the delay-time control, and controlling the photocell with another circuit so that the delay time is varied.

To the best of my knowledge, though, no one has attempted getting the delay time down short enoughto accomplish flanging, although apparently chorus and ADT effects are feasible.  If you like a challenge, I suppose go ahead and build the PT080 and mod the bejeezus out of it, but ultimately, you are probably better off having a dedicated board which targets flanging and chorus functions PLUS a discrete echo device.

Dunno but there was some hot discussion and many successful builders reported they inserted a led/ldr combo into delay time resistor path. But it was Rebote2 but same chip, same ballpark...Maybe in the last year maybe December.

OK, guys, you told me pretty much what I expected.  Any comments from Scott notwithstanding, it sounds like I have to search for one of the holy SAD chips and build Anderton's analog delay.

Mark:

Oddly enough, I kept that article for YEARS thinking I'd build that puppy "someday".  Well, in the years between 1982 and "someday", I got married and trashed the article along with all my other bachelor junk (including a '71 maple and alder Fender Jazz Bass!
Why did I ever unload that?)  Well, in the meantime, I tried a pedal or two from PAIA and Anderton's Tube Sound Fuzz.  I failed so miserably at building those that I gave up on stompboxing... then.  My question is, can Anderton's box give me the "Time After Time" vibe, and is that SAD chip even available or subbable?

Scott Swartz

All the above is correct, but I would add I don't think the PT2399 chip can go to short enough delay time for flanging or chorusing, I think I tried it back when working on the PT-80.

EDIT - I see Mark already stated this also   -   DOH!

According to the datasheet, .5ohm causes a signal delay of 31ms, which isn't even quite low enough for the application as it is, and .5 ohm is very hard to come across and very hard to vary via a pot (1 ohm pot, anyone?)
