What DIY pedal might be best for heavier distortion?

Hey guys,
Any suggestions as to a DIY pedal that might compare to something like the Fulltone DP-1, not in terms of sound quality, but in terms of a heavier distortion that falls somewhere between an overdrive and a fuzzbox?
Thanks,
Russ

The Blackfire (Joe Davisson) sounds fairly heavy.  As does a hard-driven Bazz Fuss (runoffgroove.com).

I agree with the Blackfire.

I didn't tried the new Obsidian, but the one that uses 2N5089s sounds very heavy to me, but it are versatile, so you can play lots of musical styles with it.

You could try using a lead case.

I've agonised over this a great deal, and it seems there is no easy answer. It depends a great deal on what kind of amp you're plugging into. With my Marshall, the higher gain pedals like the 'Blackfire', or 'Obsidian' just turn to mush unless I turn down my input gain WAY down, but I like an edgy rhythm sound that disappears if I turn down my input gain. I find those two pedals sound very, very good though through 'Solid State' amps clean channels, where the pedal adds all the gain, extremely heavy, especially the Transistor Obsidian. With my Marshall, I have better luck with lower gain distortion pedals like the 'Dist.+' or Brian Marshall's 'Stupid Box' along with a bit of tube amp grind.
