I am looking to get more gain into my JCM800. Has anyone built the tubescreamer to use for this purpose. I am interested to know your results. thanx :0)

Or maybe the MXR microamp might be a better idea...?

Johan

in my opinion, the tubescreamer doesnt sound very good with marshalls and cellestion speakers...simply too much high mid with that combination...I havnt tried the micro-amp, but my guess is it would be the better of the two...or you could build Jack Orman's exelent "minibooster"..simple build and great with marshalls..

good luck

Very like Tubescreamerz...which is cool cause I like TS's.
I built a SD-1 two days ago, it's kinda like a TS,  but has guts.
schematically they are quite close IMO. The SD is gained up a little more though.
They are both quite good IMO, especieally with the 'right' opamp...I've been watching 4558's take over in my OA builds.
I use a Mosfet boost. It's superb for kicking the front end of a tube amp...it mainly intensify's and 'purifies' the Tube amp sound in my tube amps...gonna hafta try another Micro-Amp with the 'butter' chips...
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

HI,

just another good try is the Highway89 at Runoffgroove.
Its very dynamic responding, smooth and comes good in front of
a not so Fender Like Amp.

But a simple Booster will do it too!

Yeah go ultra-simple and build an LPB-1, my guitarist has been shocked at the extra oomph it provides - really sends his distortion channel into crunch-ville.

How about a mosfet booster?  Those sound great in front of Marshalls

thanx guys for all the opinions. Can anyone point me to Jack Ormans minibooster? Is the same as a "mosfet booster" ??

thanx guys, Think Im going to go with Jacks booster. Im hoping I lll be able to get a much heavier more distorted sound from the JCM800. thanx

Hi,
I use a MiniBooster to kick the input of my JCM 800 and I have to say it's great!
One advice only, bypass the lower FET source 1K resistor with a 0.47uF - 0.68 uF cap, my Marshall sounds even better to my ears.

More gain out of an 800? Wow.
Okay, if it's a non-MV 800, and you want acceptable volume, I get that. See the above (Miniboosters/minitubes/Shakas are *great*!!)
IF however we're talking about a MV 800, you might want to think about *why* you want more gain.
IMHO this amp ha s kmore than enough. I've learned something not quite so long ago: a *very* big part of true distortion magic is not in gain, but in compression. Most of the great sounding (even metal) guitarists actually use LESS distortion (so less gain) but with a very good comp.
hih

Mike...
that's just blasphemous!!

Too much gain!?  bah.. never heard of it!
Where's Aron when I need him!?

GAIN!! MORE GAIN!! I LOVE GAIN!!!

heh - I'm only half kidding here.. but I'm used to a LOT more than an 800 - my main rig (Rivera TBR1-SL) has a HECK of a lot more gain than the 800 does.

hi Mike, well Im not sure what a MV800 is, but mine is a JCM800. Another poster mentioned a minibooster with their marshall. Are you talking about the Jack Orman mosfet booster or something else ? thanx. :0)

MV = Master Volume, I believe.
