Odie build report

Well, I needed a tough little overdrive for the guitar club monthly gig - last time I took the Blue Magic, but it's in a kind of weedy aluminium box and there are a lot of clumsy guys at that gig - so I built a new one in a week. Chose the Odie because it was next on my list of 'let's look closer at JFET overdrives'. I squeezed it in a really small box, and thank goodness it worked first time.

Result? Great - hats off to the RunOffGroove guys (or is that just Mr Tremblay?). Anyhoo, thanks. Next up is the 'Peppermill'.

Awesome!  Thank you for sharing the report of your success and enjoyment.

The runoffgroove.com site is a collaborative effort by myself and Gary Burchett.  Since nearly all the content is the product of our teamwork, we've chosen to operate under the runoffgroove.com "brand name" rather than receive individual credit.

Thanks again!

Gary

Yeah, like B said!

Glad you liked the circuit.  I hope it gives you many hours of enjoyment.

Ge_Whiz

Oh, it'll give years of enjoyment. Thanks again, guys.

It's kinda funny - I have a friend who is putting what little spare time he has into experimenting with TS clones. He has a stack of opamps and two of every diode known to man. He's never satisfied with the results and keeps trying again, because he has set himself the challenge of experimenting with this circuit. Meanwhile, I keep throwing two or three FETs in a box and coming up with the sound that he's aiming for!

There's a REAL lesson in irony in there somewhere!

Gary

Yes, the lesson is "sometimes less is more."

Thanks again for building one of our circuits.

Odie = O.D. = Overdrive

Just a guess

RDV = RickyDonVance = loser = etc.

You mean Ace and Gary aren't really big Garfield fans?

I'm waiting for the "lasagna" pedal to come out!  LOL

Paul Marossy

With that lasagna pedal, you need to specify what kind you would like. You could end up with a cheesy pedal...

You are correct, sir!  And I can't speak for Gary, but I'm not a fan of Garfield.

Me too!! He works at the concrete accessories(forms, tools, etc.) vendor here in Tampa. Hair like Willie Nelson, and actually a cool dude.

I'm gone for a couple of days and this thread takes a sharp left!

The RunoffGroove Eastern Division is where the names come from.  They have lots of creative types up there.  Good ones, at that.

Actually, I'm not a Garfield fan, either.  However, the cat (pun) that started the comic strip lives in the same town where I went to university (Muncie, IN).  Coincedentally, he's married to Jane Pauley.  On yet another side bar, my school's most famous grad is probably David Letterman.  Maybe that says something about my education?

RunoffGroove Midwest Division signing off...

javacody

Gary, that answers many things, such as the Ace and Gary email addresses and your location.

Jenny, I've got your number, I need to make you mine.

Tubebass

I thought Jane Pauley was married to Gary Trudeau (Doonsbury)?
More dynamics????? I'm playing as loud as I can!

You're correct.  Actually, this probably marks the first time that someone confused Garfield with Doonesbury...

I don't know, garfield can be pretty political.

Back to the topic, how does the ODIE sound with single coils? Also, how similar is it to the OD2?

Ge_Whiz

I rather tend towards the more 'subtle' end of the overdrive scale, and for this purpose, the range of the Blue Magic is slightly more appropriate than that of the Odie (which comes in harder and turns up to much harder). However, for those rockin' moments, the extra range of the Odie is a boon. Anyhoo, to answer the original question, the single-coil sound to me covers a good range from subtle to heavy (though not 'screaming', for which I'd use another box anyway).

Then you'll really like the Peppermill. In fact if I were you, I'd probably put an Odie and a Peppermill both in the same box(15900BB) with two separate bypass switches so you can have it either way. But that's just me!

Cheerio!

Both circuits were voiced with single coils in mind.  They will work well with HBs, too.  I think both make a great alternative to the usual tubescreamer setup.

BTW, sorry about the Davis/Trudeau confusion.  Too many mind-altering substances were "explored" in the past.  Cosmically, my nickname in college was "Doonesbury," due to the facial similarities I share with a couple of the characters in said comic strip.  Go figure.
