On my mosfet bosster I am only getting 4V where there should be input of 9V from the battery. The thing just makes alot of noise with a barely audible guitar signal in the background.

I have tried every conceivable way of hooking this thing up in the wiring PDF. I have gotta be doing something wrong. My TS does the same thing. I have gone over the components more than once.

My battery isnt flat and I have tried every different combination imaginable in hooking up the in and out jacks. Please, some suggestions, I am about to give up and throw em away. thanx.

Need more info on how and where you are taking your readings from in the circuit. Also what PDF you are talking about, etc.

If the battery is good, you're shorting it rather badly somehow. Beware: the battery will probably get very, very hot...
Got some more info for us?

Ok. Well it turns out that I replaced the BS170, thinking that I may have killed it with static when putting it in, now it works!!! Definate volume boost when switched in BUT the vol. pot dosent seem to have any effect on level at all. I have tried wiring it this way and that way, but nothing. Any ideas what else could be causing this? thanx again :0)

BTW I am using the mosfet booster from tonepad...

Mike Burgundy

so apparently the mosfet was shorted - it happens.
If the volume pot doesn't work, theres got to be a wiring problem (assuming the pot's ok - measure with a DMM between an outer lug and the middle and turn).
Didi you use the layout at tonepad or perf?
Are you sure the 100u cap is orientated correctly (positive to MOSFET)?

Yeah it does :0) Lesson Learned. Ok, well I am using the PCB layout from tonepad. The pot measures ok. BUT I used a poly film cap for the 100u , so no polarity. Maybe I should have used a electro? This may be the prob?

Mike Burgundy

no, poly that should be fine - a 100u poly cap though? That thing 'll be huge! You sure you used the right value? If it's too small, the volume will act more like a tone knob than a volume.
Have you hooked up all 3 pot terminals?
It's easier to run just two wires to (the outside lugs of ) the pot and connect the right lug to the middle *on* the pot. Less wire running, less oportunity for mistakes. Make sure whatever cap you're using is still ok - I doubt you've blown it, but if it is open the pot wont do a thing...
If all this is ok (measure!!) I don't know what could cause it, frankly.

Thanx for the suggestions Mike. Yeah I had to some severe leg bending on the poly to make it fit! I was sure it was the right value, but I replaced it with a 100uf electro anyway. Still the pot dosent work!! I tried your wiring suggestion and STILL nothing!! Very annoying, I will have to think of something else to try. The pot definately measures ok on DMM...
