i`am about to buy an amp for small club gigs and i`m willing to pay 700$ max.
can you suggest me of a good tube amp in that range?
is a vox valvetronix 60w a good option(does it really sound like tube?)

Are you looking for something ready to play... or are you willing to do a little surgury on it to get some DIY value?

Also, what sort of music do you play and what sort of effects do you use? (or want to use in the future?)

Take care,

Jesus many come to mind for under $700.

Well there are to many to mention!  If you shop around bro you can get a whup ass tube amp at that price man!

Best kept secret of the amp world is Guild amps.  Same as Supro and half the price.  Because of Page and Hendrix Supros are pretty high now.  But the guild is the same job.  Jump on ebay bro!  Plenty on there for under $700 .  Another wonderful potential beast is the Silverface bandmaster.  Lot's of potential with those in mods.  Hell you can pickup a JCM800 for around $400.  Jesus man to many at that price.  What are you playing?  $700 can get alot for the sly savy shopper.

no i´m looking for a ready to play amp
i play mostly classic rock and some pop and hard rock
i thinking of using it with some cool distortion pedals i have made...
i have a valvestate 100w which is too big for small clubs (and gonna sell it)so i use a tranny crate 15w which i run through the console but i don´t like the sound so much...so i´m thinking to buy an amp loud enough for small club gigs that i won´t need to run through the console all the time with cool clean and classic rock sound.

Do you want onboard reverb?  Or do you want just straight amp no onboard effects?

Yepp, you can get a great amp going.
There's another thread about, what's you're tone worth..along the same lines...
since you DIY, I would recommend an old guitar amp design, like these guys have said...some good sleepers mentioned.
I don't know what MkII's go for these days, I got mine in 96 for 650$...just the head...I would imagine there are some nice used ones around, mine was voiced with nasty high end I lived with for years....OUCH !!!
Tubes only in signal path, highest quality transformers...that's my two cents !!! The rest can probably be figured out N/P.

Check out the Rivera Chubster or R55.  M-60's can be found used in this price range as well, they have a ton of tweaking options.

I'll second the vote for a Rivera... you can pick up a used M60 combo pretty cheap I think... I only paid about $300 bucks for my Rivera head, but that was a steal (it was like $2K new).

If you have a cab  - you can probably find a Bassman pretty cheap still.

I'm a Rivera owner and can recommend them also, but the Peavey Classic 50 is generally considered a good deal. The other guitarist in my band uses one. I'm looking at the Fender Deluxe RI for smaller gigs.

are you talking about the fender hot rod deluxe? If so, you should know about two big problems with that amp - the speaker and the gain channels. the gain is just nasty. I could see using it for some things, but as a main distortion it's just too gross. the speaker is crap too. sounds way too stiff. the breakup is terrible.

just so's you know. i know they had/have a non-hot rod deluxe, but i havent played that.

well, it's just my opinion. the clean is really clear.

100 watt Seymour Duncan Convertible 1x12 combo (they made a head, too). With a few extra preamp modules, you can emulate virtually any amp. Granted, it won't sound exactly like the original, but you can get pretty darn close to Marshall, Fender and some SS amps. You also have reverb and variable wattage, and a switch to switch the power tubes (EL-34) between pentode and triode modes. Also, there is a speaker dampening control. Lots of cool features.

All this for around $400-500. Check ebay, there is usually a few for sale. I have one, and it is a cool amp. You can also check out the Convertible webpage at my website for more info.

Going back to your original suggestion, the Vox Valvetronix amps are absolutely incredible if you want versatility. If you contact Vox, they can supply a demo CD with some great demonstrations on it, but the magazines regularly award plaudits to the Valvetronix range.

Good call, Paul
I used to have a Convertible 100... kinda wish I hadn't sold it.

Where are you located? If your in the states go yo http://www.recycler.com  all kinds of Marshall 2 X 12 combo's under $700 that aside the Rivera's are killer. I don't own one but the last couple months I've had access to a Rivera fifty five twelve and it is a smokin' little amp with all kinds of switching options.

I live hear in Seattle.  I was talking to Andy Marshall the owner of THD here and he was telling me that his favorite amp of all the amps in history to mod and is the best bang for the buck in amps is the Peavey Classic 20.  He had high regards for the 30 but he said he had modded many classic 20s and they were his fav.  He said they didn't need much modding only a little.  Words from a great amp builder!  The man definately knows his shit when it comes to amps.  I don't own a classic 20 but I am curious.  If I ever run across one at the right price I might jump on it. :D

petemoore

I've seen the cute little Marshall 18w'ers Roar!
Dude had some real ly nice 2x12' VOXER's and that cute little head on there. He's an amp repair guy...
N/P, really quite the clubbin' amp. Spread out over some speaker cone, 20w can really get big.
 2xEL34/6L6...+ 2X12'' speakers...always seem to work well...I'm sure there's others...
