When the core started to glow and people started yelling, he promptly ran out the door and up a nearby hill.

Thats the Carvin switchable 5 band mesa type... the preamp has a 4 band bax...it's sweet.
What's cool is the Carvin doesn't need coils like the mesa BUT... there are a bunch of 5 band eq pedals that
are so cheap you can buy one and rehouse it for way less than building one. I'd love to see the Carvin 4 band
in a pedal with a fet front end.

I like simplicity. My favourite amp (which I seldom get to use lately. Even at 8 watts clean it's still too loud when it's at it's sweet spot) just has a volume and tone, but the tone was modified from a Supro-style tone control to a BMP type. The amp was tuned to have enough brightness that it usually sounds best with the tone set right in the middle. (go figure) I always have a single tone & volume on my guitars with a treble-bleed on the volume control. On a two-pickup guitar that gives lots of tone possibilities. Thinking of putting a control-bypass switch on the next guitar I build (for solos, so I don't have to mess with the volume) and maybe one of those Artec passive varitone-style tone switches in place of the regular tone pot. Hmmm, maybe even with only one pickup. I miss having a one-pickup guitar. (simplicity) Anyways, BMP on an amp (with 'bright' and 'normal' inputs) and a treble-bleed and regular tone pot on guitar. Pedals, well, they all have their individual needs.
