Slightly off subject but those of us in the northern hemisphere are nearing the longest day, which is always better for building stuff especially when the sun is shining in the room where one is working. I'm curious as to what time it gets dark at the moment in various parts of the world. In London England, given a clear sky, the light starts to fade at about 8.30pm at the moment leading up to 21 June which will give us roughly another hour. I remember being in Portugal near to the most westerly point, one hour ahead of GMT, where we still had daylight at nearly 11pm!

I used to live in Edmonton, which actually isn't THAT far north, all things considered, but it is certainly the most northern major urban area in North America. (yes Anchorage is a *real* city, and further north, but Edmonton is the bigger of the two, by far)  During the dead of summer you could still read the newspaper outside at 11:15PM and clearly identify colours as late as 11:30.  Of course, that also meant that December and January involved going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark.

Sunset here is around 8:15. I haven't gotten used to it. By the time I come inside from watering my newly seeded yard, everyone's in bed or getting ready for it.

Last night the sunset was at about 8:10 here just North of San Francisco.

The further north you go, the longer the sun stays above the horizon in summer. In winter it is opposite. In midsummer we almost have "nightless night". In Lapland sun does not go down at all. I remeber took a tour there at summer, kids were playing outdoors at 2:30 AM and it was like bright day.

Just think summer rock festival light show people...

I spent two weeks on an island in northern Norway about five years ago during early summer, and the midnight sun was an experience I will never forget, you will slowly loose track of time, at the end I was awake at "night" and slept during the "day", the creepy silence during the sunlit night was really incredible... If you ever have a chance to get above the polar circle during early summer, go for it!

This is fascinating. Let's here from some more folks - calling Argentina!

The SHORTEST day of the year is best for FX building, because you don't have people making you go out & enjoy the weather! Actually, in the DIY-SYNTH list, the Europeans seem to work on a cycle where you build stuff to get ready to play at the parties starting on May 1st.... so I guess they are in a REPAIRING stuff mode round about now

Argentina in here....l live way south from buenos aires. At the northern patagonia. I here the sun goes down at about 8 pm, this season, earlier in winter, and something like 10 pm in summer. There are days when there's still light at 11 to 11,30, in summer. If you go souther it's worst. In usuahia, a place i had visited, you have like 5 hours of sun in winter, and 5 of darkness in summer. And the dawns and sunsets are amazing, everything turns purple pink. guess prive and gringo cann tell more about different places, this is a big country.
Cool thread!

Hi SWT, I've been to Ushuaia, that was in 1990. We saw the penguins at Punto Tombo, then flew to Rio Gallegos - drove to El Califate and stayed at Los Nostros by the Perito Moreno glacia - awesome! Then flew down to Ushuahia for 3 days. Did you go to the famous fish restaurant there?

wow Stephen. It's amazing down there, right? . I'm afraid i'm a vegetarian, so i might miss some interesting places when it comes to food. But I have had an amazing trip once...as i live in northern patagonia, i took my truck, all camping and survival stuff, and took two months to travel to every place i could from here, to usuahia, and back. I met petrified woods, penguins, glaciers, and visit all the lakes that were on the map. have trouble with foxes, and all kind of animals, seen condors, eagles, etc, Kind of like all the nature stuff. What i still can't get is why man is destroying it's habitat the way it's done....it's so fast...feel really bad sometimes.
I took a walk to upsala glacier, the biggest in the world, and it's getting back like 200 meters per year, so it won't take long to dissappear. And also went to perito moreno...that year was supposed to break, but took 12 years after that to do it....it was supposed to do it every four years, and i went at 8th one...
It's good to know a person that likes my country. I feel very proud of the land i'm living at. The only bad thing here is economy and politicians...but we put up with...greetings from the south!!!! Cheers!!

Well, right now it's 6:30pm and it's as dark as it gets, and a month from now, when we hit june 21st (shortest day in the south hemisphere) i guess that by 6pm it'll be closed night. Dawn is at ~8am.

In summer, dawn is at 5-6am, and sunset at about 21:30-22hs.

I live in Tandil, Buenos Aires, almost at the middle (latitud-wise) of the country.
