I went to a recycling place today and paid $2 for a few boards that had a bunch of 2n3053's.  What can I do with these?  Also, I paid $5 for an old oscilliscope (don't think it works).  How would I go about turning the osc. on and checking its condition?
It's people like us who contribute to dead fx pedals selling on eBay for what they'd cost new!

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Wow.... cool power supply! Thanks for posting the link.

That triple Darlington makes me think.  :twisted:

If that is the same medal case one the Radio Shack has, I think they sound pretty good in a Fuzz Face.  Build a Ms. Piggy and you can use twice as many.  Put a BMP stage (with or without diodes) in front/back of the Ms. Piggy.  Hear Ms. Piggy squeal EEEEEEEEEEEoooooooowwwwwwwwww all the way home.   8)

Re; the CRO;

Make sure it's cleaned up.  Maybe open the case and look for obvious stuff.  Blown transistors, resistors, bulging caps etc.  Check the fuse.

Then, put it back together, hold your breath, be ready on the off switch on the power point and give it a shot!

You can build a 50W into 8ohm / 100W into 4 ohm amplifier, or use them in a  variable bench power supply.  The problem is these days you can buy IC which do these jobs, the IC's are much easier to work and often cheaper when you consider the cost of the overall job.

I've a got a heap of these too and that's all I've been able to use them for - I know those transistors very well.   I haven't brought myself to do much with them either!

*** Edit:

Sorry, somehow I misread the title as 2N3055.  The above comments are rubbish.

The 2N3053 can be used as Q2 in a fuzz face.
