I had some things to say in light of a recent thread on this forum.

I decided against posting it here, and instead have opted to give you all the option to read it or not. It's posted at my personal site at Volcanoboy.

Like everything else on the internet, take it with a grain of salt.

Iread the rant, it seemed like the actual 'subject' was left out.
I'm sorry your disappointed about whatever 'that' was....oh what was it...?
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I agree with you. Sometimes I fell like you when I saw things like the one that you said. I think we all are like a family, so I don't understand why some people act like this.

It's actually not important what the actual subject was. I just have had bad internet forum experiences over the last few months that I felt I needed to vent about.

You hit a nail on the head. We are all like a family. Marcos, you live so many thousands of miles from me, and we may not ever meet, but thanks to this site, we are like family. That said, there are always those younger brothers who act out and make your life hell, as well as those older sisters who bully you and steal your cookie. Families are like that. I realize that. I've just been really disheartened with the internet culture lately.

I think about how internet-savvy many younger people are now. Grade school kids.... they IM each other all day. They speak in a language of emoticons and LMFAO and BRB. That's cool. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for the days when I used to write letters (snail mail) or talk on the phone, or better yet, hang out with people in real life. It's harder to be an obnoxious bully when you feel like someone might actually pop you one in the flesh! (speaking about other forums, by the way, not this one....)

Yeah, I guess you could make the argument that you need a thicker skin. But don't feel too bad about it. The whole point of the exercise here IMO is to have fun and learn something along the way. That's why I come here. And if those 2 things aren't happening, I'm gone, it's that simple. It's not a case of thicker/thinner skin with me, it's a case of what do I prefer to spend my time doing?

If you like to argue, get into character assassination, etc, etc, there are plenty of political et al forums on the internet in which to do that. I'm not interested in that sort of thing so I don't hang out at those places. Every once in a while something will blow up here and someone will say something rude. But it all gets put back together and things return to normal pretty quickly. Peter and Aron do a good job moderating this sort of thing.

I know exactly what and 'who' you are refering to. I completely agree with you on those points. Luckily however, this person & his 'comments' represent a very small minority of those who post here. A few 'bad apples' can spoil the barrel, again, luckily, I don't think this particular 'barrel' will be spoiled because of the positive qualities of the majority of posters here.

I totally agree with your article. There is a tendency to belittle those who are upset by the vitriol found all over the Internet ("Dude, chill, it's just the internet...") but I find the way people act to be extremely disturbing from a social standpoint. This cartoon is about video games, but I think it sums up the "road rage" esque qualities of the Internet pretty well:

I'm so glad you mentioned "road rage."  It's a very very similar concept to me. Posting on the internet is like driving a car. Except on the internet, people can't actually see you picking your nose.... but we know that you do.

I also have complete faith in this particular forum. Peter and Aron are great at keeping things on track, not to mention that the posters here are interested in making pedals, not debating!

"Debates" over the particulars of what we're actually here for are how the learning process continues. I want people to disagree with me so I can learn more about DIY effects. I just don't want to be flamed for having a conflicting opinion. I love to be 'proven' wrong, so I can learn the right, or at least 'better' way.

I guess I agree with all above, I just want to add.slightly off topic (sorry), but highly relevant..there are many nationalities represented in this forum ( good thing) and something that might be totaly accepted to joke about in YOUR culture might be totaly offencive in someone elses...Irony and sarcasm, that is so common in my native tounge ( swedish ) doesnt do well in the writen word, so I try not to post when I am tired and I think about it a lot when I do.... its so easy to click on the smiley when joking, and it takes the edge of anything that might offend your "brothers of the soldering iron" ..please keep this in mind booth when posting and when reading others posts...just a thought....
...and by the way..I've allready had half a bottle of wine...and I Love you all... :D

Okay, so do you really love us or was that meant ironically??? :D

Oh and I want to respond to the comment about how we know that everyone is picking their nose, as soon as I can get these boogers wiped off my keyboard.... Give me a minute here....

I agree completely with the article and the posts above.Having said that, lets remember that each of us has probably said, or done something that we later regretted. None of us is perfect, and forgiveness is the high road on such matters.
This world today is so full of presure and stress that sometime people vent that stress on whoever they come in contact with.(This is not right ,but it is human.) It seems to me if someone repeatedly shows themselves to be combative and argumentative, the forum by its very nature will dissolve these negative elements.
I'm relatively new here, but I can say that the overwhelming majority of people have been warm and kind hearted.I look at the forum as a  refuge from the hectic and nonsensical world outside, a  place  where people can  actually get along  and  communicate on  peaceful  terms. I hope my idealistic view of  this forum never changes.

I agree that offhand bad days are to be 100% forgiven, but I also think the problem with Internet anonymity is far more insidious than that, and the things people say to each other on good days on the Internet are things they would never dream of saying to someone's face.

roger- just remember:

"flamin' is lamin'"

technical facts are one thing, but when people get their egos involved it turns into a case of "shit%^&*" (see graphic above- I love that!)
